THE HISTORY OF WHITE STAG
The WHITE STAG RALLY is now in its 21st year of existence. It was first conceived by the
demented minds of RENO BMW's Jan Cutler and Steve Lotsofsky in 1990. In the
beginning this was never meant to be labeled as a Rally. They figured there
were no other rides going on in the winter, so they decided, why not see how
many people are crazy enough to ride to Beatty for dinner in the dead of
winter, and that's how it all began. The only stipulation was that in order to
attend, one had to ride a motorcycle FROM Reno to Beatty, Nevada and show up by
6:00pm for dinner. I was among the original 5 riders to participate. I rode
from my home in Las Vegas to Reno and then to Beatty. We left Reno on Saturday
morning with the temps hovering around 15 degrees and light snow, a perfect day
for a ride. A great time was had by all and everyone agreed to do it again the
next year. By 1991, we saw the players increase to about 25. 1992 then grew to
about 35, and so on and so forth.
In 1995 Jan decided that he had, had enough
fun putting it together and decided that I should be the lucky one to take
over. I decided that since we now had a lot of riders, perhaps we could make it
a riding event in somewhat of a rally format, and so in 1996 it took on a new
dimension, becoming much more challenging and fun. In 1998, we had a total of
78 riders, but a group this size was not as manageable or as much fun, so the
field was cut back to 50 riders. In 1999 we moved the Rally to a new home in
Tonopah, Nevada which proved to be a great change.
One never knows what the weather will bring in
January. Some years, we have seen spring like riding days, others it was rainy
or cold, or both. 1999 arrived and this became the King of WHITE STAGS, as the
weather really put the riders to the test. Upon departing Saturday morning at
6:30am, the temperature in Tonopah was a mild 12 degrees above zero. There was
snow everywhere, but all roads were clear with no ice or snow. The mountain
passes had a temperature inversion and it was warmer going over them than in
the valleys, however, some areas were still hovering at temperatures of zero or
below, man these guys are tough!.
I could go on and on, but to fully appreciate the
experience of WHITE STAG, you must ride in it. So if you have the balls to
ride..... rain, snow, or shine, then the WHITE STAG is a must. You will
experience one hell of a good time with some of the best and toughest riders
you can find. Last year we had riders from 11 states and as far away as
Virginia. WHITE STAG IS.... THE PREMIER WINTER RALLY! Will we
see you next year?
